Consumers Energy Launches $1.2 Billion Plan to Strengthen Michigan’s Electric Grid
Consumers Energy, Michigan’s largest energy provider, has launched a comprehensive $1.2 billion Reliability Action Plan to strengthen the state’s electric grid, enhance power reliability, and support nearly two million homes and businesses across Michigan. This ambitious initiative comes in response to the growing demand for resilient energy infrastructure and the recent severe winter storms that affected communities including Grand Rapids, Flint, Lansing, and Northern Michigan.
The 2026 Reliability Action Plan has received approval from the Michigan Public Service Commission (MPSC) and marks a continuation of Consumers Energy’s multi-year commitment to improving electric reliability. Since 2021, the company has reduced the average customer’s downtime by one hour, a 28% reduction in power outages—the largest reliability improvement nationally over the same period.
Key Upgrades to Modernize Michigan’s Electric Grid
Consumers Energy’s plan focuses on targeted infrastructure upgrades and advanced technology deployment to reduce outages and improve service quality. Key initiatives under the plan include:
- Tree Trimming Expansion – Doubling the miles trimmed along power line corridors to prevent storm-related outages.
- Power Line Burial – Placing more overhead lines underground to protect against extreme weather events and reduce interruptions.
- Enhanced Poles and Infrastructure – Installing new poles designed to withstand strong winds and storms, boosting overall grid resilience.
- Smart Technology Deployment – Implementing advanced systems capable of instantly detecting and responding to service interruptions for faster restoration.
- Grid Security Measures – Strengthening both physical and digital security of the grid to prevent cyber threats and maintain uninterrupted service.
Greg Salisbury, Senior Vice President of Electric Distribution at Consumers Energy, emphasized, “Our Reliability Action Plan represents a major investment to ensure fewer and shorter power outages while empowering customers to manage rising energy costs.”
Balancing Reliability and Affordability
Consumers Energy understands the financial pressures Michigan residents face, from rising energy costs to everyday household expenses. Kelly Hall, Senior Vice President of Regulatory and Legal Affairs, explained, “Our goal is to make smart, cost-effective upgrades that prevent problems before they occur while keeping electricity affordable and reliable for all customers.”
Approximately 75 cents of every customer dollar under the plan will directly fund grid modernization and reliability improvements, ensuring that investments have a tangible impact on service quality.
Community Support and Customer Assistance
Beyond infrastructure upgrades, Consumers Energy is actively helping residents affected by last winter’s harsh conditions. Special outreach programs focus on seniors and vulnerable populations, assisting with energy bill management and promoting practices to reduce future costs.
Additionally, the company has contributed $5 million to 11 nonprofit organizations across Michigan to provide direct assistance for energy bills. These efforts are aimed at helping families stay current on payments, avoid service disruptions, and reduce financial stress during extreme weather months.
Looking Ahead: Continued Investment in Michigan’s Grid
Consumers Energy is preparing to submit its 2027 Reliability Action Plan in June, ensuring ongoing investment in grid modernization and reliability. The company’s long-term strategy combines preventive maintenance, advanced technology, and responsive customer care to create a more resilient energy system for Michigan residents and businesses.
By leveraging tree trimming, infrastructure upgrades, and smart grid technology, Consumers Energy anticipates fewer emergency repairs, reduced outage impacts, and faster restoration times. These measures reinforce Michigan’s energy system, making it adaptable to extreme weather and future energy demands.
Consumers Energy: A Commitment to Innovation and Reliability
As Michigan faces evolving energy challenges, Consumers Energy continues to set a benchmark for utility providers nationwide. By combining infrastructure enhancements, technology-driven solutions, and direct customer support, the company ensures reliable, safe, and affordable electricity for all.
“The Reliability Action Plan isn’t just about keeping the lights on,” added Salisbury. “It’s about empowering communities, supporting customers, and ensuring Michigan’s energy system is prepared for the future. Every dollar invested strengthens the grid and benefits the people who rely on us daily.”
With this $1.2 billion investment, Consumers Energy demonstrates that long-term reliability, innovation, and customer-focused service are not only achievable but essential to a modern, resilient electric grid in Michigan.
