One of the key benefits of Alcatraz AI’s solution is its adaptability. The facial recognition devices can be integrated into existing access control or video management systems without the need for overhauls. This flexibility allows companies with numerous card readers or entry systems to attach Rock X units seamlessly above existing devices or replace them, using the current cabling infrastructure. The installation feeds video directly into virtual or video management systems, enabling a clear, eye-level view of all who enter, while cutting down installation costs.

Ongoing costs are manageable and flexible, with options to run the software on-premises or in the cloud. Some customers use Alcatraz AI’s cloud, hosted in AWS, either in single-tenant or multi-tenant configurations. Others prefer to keep the platform on their internal servers, particularly if they manage their own infrastructure or have specific data security requirements. “For some companies, moving to the cloud isn’t preferred, so we’re completely flexible on deployment,” noted Blaine Frederick, Alcatraz AI’s VP of Product.

Overcoming Limitations of Traditional Biometrics

Biometric technology, especially in facial and fingerprint recognition, has been around for some time but hasn’t always kept up with changing needs. Frederick explained that many early biometric systems relied on outdated technology that stored static templates of facial data. “Over time, as appearances change, these systems become less reliable without regular updates from IT or HR departments,” he said.

Today, advanced AI processors and GPUs allow biometric systems to operate at the edge, meaning the device itself handles all AI/ML processing without relying on network connectivity. “Our device includes a GPU, which processes AI tasks on the edge, providing redundancy and making sure the system remains reliable even if network access is interrupted,” Frederick said. This self-contained processing power ensures a high level of security and operational consistency.

Reducing Security Risks like Tailgating

Beyond access control, Alcatraz AI’s system addresses workplace vulnerabilities like tailgating, which occurs when unauthorized individuals follow employees into secure areas. “Tailgating isn’t usually malicious; people are simply being polite, holding the door for the next person. But the reality is that you need tools to know if someone should be there and to alert security when they’re not,” Frederick explained.

These technologies help ensure that only authorized individuals are present, a necessity in environments where security breaches or even insider threats can pose severe risks. Frederick noted that many data breaches and attacks happen not through network hacking but via unauthorized physical access to company infrastructure. “Knowing the right people are in the right places is essential, especially to prevent former employees or malicious actors from accessing sensitive areas,” he said.
